Trell-planting is often used with more modern vineyards and consists of parallel rows of vines with a separation of approximately 1.5 metres between plants. The branches are guided by wires, which can vary from 2 to 4, supported by posts. The posts are of two types: header posts, which head the different rows and are usually taller and more robust, made of wood, metal or concrete; and intermediate posts, which are placed in the different rows and serve to distribute the weight and place the wires at different heights depending on the growth of the vine.
The number of wires will determine whether the trellis is high or low. For cold climates, the low, since, being close to the ground, it takes advantage of the heat that it radiates.
Different types of materials are used to hold the branches of the vine, fine wire or raffia, always taking care not to strangle the vine.
In espalier training The initial investment is more expensive than with bush pruning, but it pays off quickly as the various tasks in the vineyard can be mechanized, such as winter pruning, green pruning and harvesting. In addition, it provides an increase in production.
Another advantage of trellis planting is the improvement in the health of the vines and grapes, as they have greater ventilation and therefore fewer fungal diseases. They also provide greater sunlight. to the bunches, allowing the concentration of sugars thanks to photosynthetic action, generating bunches that are more uniform in ripening and size.
In addition, the espalier formation facilitates irrigation and a greater use of space, it is perfect for rich soils and cold climates.
Most of the vineyards at Bodegas Federico are trained on trellises. This system provides part of the quality characteristics of our wines. The vineyards are carefully cared for throughout the year, so that the vines reach their maximum potential and thus extract the best grapes. the highest quality of each of its grapes from the main variety of the D.O. Ribera del Duero, the Tempranillo grape. This is how we make our wines with the Denomination, Tinto Federico.
