We are in pruning season, one of the most important tasks in the vineyard, whose objective is to control the formation of the plant and production, since the quality and quantity of the future harvest will depend on pruning.
The vine is a climbing plant whose branches can grow several dozen meters. If we let it grow uncontrolled, the buds located at the ends will sprout, the plant will have many leaves and numerous bunches, but with small and low-quality grapes.
The main pruning is winter pruning. During this time the vine is dormant and the sap is concentrated in the trunk of the vine, in addition this cold weather favors healing, eliminates fungi and prevents them from spreading.
With pruning, part of the vegetative mass is removed, with the aim of improving yield and quality, always respecting its biological uniqueness; The size and length of the shoots is reduced to adapt the plant to the space in which it is grown, so that although it produces fewer grapes, these are thicker and of greater quality. Pruning also reduces the ageing of the vine by renewing its stems, favouring the exposure and distribution of leaves and bunches, which optimises the quality of the grape and improves the flow of sap.
To carry out pruning correctly, you have to know how to differentiate between strong branches and weak or damaged ones; you should cut off branches and leaves that are not necessary, that are dry or have diseased parts and that overload the plant.
It is important to have the tool disinfected to avoid the spread of diseases and to keep it clean to keep it in good condition.
On our Social Networks (Facebook, Twitter and Instagram), we have published several videos where we showed pruning in vines of different ages. A careful and meticulous job that will be completed with green pruning, which is carried out in spring, so that you can enjoy our Tinto Federico Roble, Tinto Federico Crianza, Tinto Federico Reserva and Tinto Federico Gran Reserva wines.
